About the founder of Skybody® System, Fran Sperling:
Fran Sperling has spent over 30 years in the performing arts, beginning with her interest in theatre. She graduated with a BA in Theatre from SUNY Oswego, where she performed in and directed plays, and studied stage design: the seed of her visual exploration and questioning of how a stage design could come alive and become integrated into movement for the physical performer.
In NY, she performed various roles in theatre and film, most notably, Sarah in Matty Rich’s film, Straight Out of Brooklyn, Stanley Brechner’s experimental play Children of…. at his American Jewish Theatre, and Rome Neal’s radio adaptation of Life During Wartime, along with more experimental roles such as Il Nottambulo, performing as an acrobat in this Don Quixote opera. She co-adapted /directed scenes from Thane Rosenbaum’s novel Golems of Gotham for the OPEN residencey at the 14th st Y, fusing aerial/acrobatics, clowning and physical theatre into visual interpretation of this delicate serio-comedy’s script.
Fran’s segue into circus evolved from a love of dance and magic. She danced with Muzia Dance Company for 4 years—an acrobatic-based modern dance company with influences from Graham and Pilates. She also danced with Soundance, Sean Curran, Terry Beeman, and NY Theatre Ballet, and was awarded a scholarship to Pierre Dulaine’s American Ballroom Theatre. Fran taught at the inception of Dulaine’s inner-city school’s Dancing Classrooms program, where she remained teaching for 3 more years. She performed with the magic duo Mundaka and Illumnya in Atlantic City, learning the backstage secrets of top magic acts.
Her circus career took flight when she became the topmounter of a two-woman acrobatic duo. Acrobrats traveled worldwide and performed for Donald Trump, Patricia Birch, Lincoln Center’s Little Orchestra Society and Out of Doors Festival, Big Apple Circus, MTV, new world circuses and festivals, corporate events and for an educational program they created- teaching children about equalibristics.
As an aerialist, Fran performs on a multitude of apparatus: silks, trapeze, double trapeze, lyra, double lyra, rope, Spanish web. Her credits include Late Night with David Letterman, Bindlestiff Circus, Big Apple Circus, the Zipper Theatre’s Above the Belt, Streb, Zamperla Circus and the spider in Alessandra Belloni’s various adaptations of Tarantella; Spiderdance– most recently directed by Jeff Whiting. Fran performed in a New Year’s Eve Phish concert in Madison Square Garden. The aerial show, above the 20,000 fans, and stage show was conceived by David Gallo, with choreography by Lisa Shriver (currently of Jesus Christ Superstar fame).
Her aerial mentors were Juliana Neves, Aloysia Gavre, Serenity and Elsie Smith, all from Cirque du Soliel, Brett Womack ( Cirque School LA), Terry Beeman, Kevin O’Connor, Chelsea Bacon and the San Francisco Circus School.
Fran founded Skybody® in 2008, being the first aerialist in NYC to develop a full-fledged Aerial Arts/Fitness program within Reebok Sports Club/NY, where she honed her Fierce Aerial Bootcamp, Fly! Aerial Fitness and Float® Aerial Yoga programming. Her fitness fusion of aerial artistry, conditioning and yoga continues to receive accolades from national and local press, including Live with Regis and Kelly, TV Guide Network, Good Morning America, CBS’s Toni On NY, and has been hailed by NY Magazine, Time Out, German Glamour Business and Vogue, Self, the NY Post, and Vital Juice, as some examples, for its uniquely fun, inspirational and effective workouts.
She is a Certified Personal Trainer, ISHTA Yoga instructor, Thai yoga practitioner (studied with David Lutt, co-founder of College Osteo Thai), Yamuna Body Rolling Practitioner, and avid AcroYogi.
